Simple Baby Shower Games

Wednesday, January 29, 2020

I did away with an old-school, Italian tradition and had a baby shower! I know, it's a silly tradition to begin with, but for years I heard my grandmother worrying about celebrations happening before the "actual" day. To be fair, I did have my Sweet 16 two days before my real sixteenth birthday against her wishes, and OK sure there was a horrible nor'easter that night, but does that really prove anything?

Anyway, my shower was all I could have hoped for! My mother, sister, and I put a lot of work into the little details. Exhausting in trimester 3? Absolutely, but it was totally worth it in the end.

Our games were a hit! Here are some ideas you might want to try during your fun-filled shower.

Guess Mommy's Belly Size!

This game was easy to set up. All you'll need is:

  • Yarn
  • Pencils
  • Card stock
  • Scissors
  • A basket
  • Print and Cut feature on Cricut Design Space

Guests used the yarn to estimate the size of my belly. We put small grooves on the ends of the card stock to make it easier for them to wrap their cut string around it and to keep the guesses together in the basket.

After all, guesses were in, my sister measured my belly in front of everyone. She used that string as a measure against everyone's predictions. Just to prove there was no funny business, she held the winners' strings beside mine as a reference.

We ended up with three winners! Two teachers and my cousin, a third-grader. Coincidence? Well, estimating lengths is an NJ elementary school state standard, so I'll let you be the judge.

The Diaper and Bottle Challenge!

This was my absolute favorite game of the day! Once guests found their tables, they were faced with a choice: choose the name of either my husband, brother, father, or father-in-law. No explanation as to why. Just go with your gut!

The best part? The men had no idea why their names were listed on these cards. Their panic slowly started to set in as we collected the cards from each table and sorted them into piles for each name selected.

The game...which soon-to-be daddy, uncle, or grandpa could diaper a baby (doll) and down a baby bottle of water the fastest? Guest cheered for their chosen victor as the men raced to the finish.

Granted, this activity does call for breaking another tradition of "women-only" baby showers. But what's one more old-school custom broken? I say, let the guys in on the fun! You'll be glad you did.

I know it's blurry, but that's how fierce the competition was!

Names for Pink and Blue

I did say I was breaking from typical traditions here, but there's one thing my husband and I decided to do that some might call a little old fashioned. We don't know the gender of our little peanut.

I know, I know. It's so unlike millennials to want to wait for anything. To be honest, my sister thinks we're insane for not finding out. Doing so did allow us to have this little no-prize game, however.

"We don't know, and neither do you, so please suggest a name for both pink and blue."

I cannot take credit for this adorable little rhyme, but if anyone knows who to shout out for this one, I'm happy to do so! All this activity took was a glass bowl, some pink & blue card stock, markers, and BOOM, name suggestions galore!

My teacher friends had a bit too much fin with this one. After all, if you're a teacher you know that some names are just forever off-limits for your own kids after 180 days with THAT student. There were some pretty great name ideas thrown in that my husband and I hadn't considered. Will we choose one of them? Honestly, maybe!

All in all, I'd say the shower was a huge hit! We can't wait for our little bundle of joy to arrive in March, especially now that our little one-bedroom apartment is teeming with baby toys and furniture. This mommy-to-be is as happy as can be!
